GAMCOTRAP was established in 1984 following a conference in Dakar where African women discussed issues affecting their rights such as harmful traditional practices.

GAMCOTRAP is a non-governmental organisation registered with the NGO Affairs Agency and the Association for non-governmental organisation (TANGO). It is affiliated to the inter- Africa Committee (IAC) on Traditional practices.

GAMCOTRAP’s mission is to create awareness about traditional practices in The Gambia. We aim for the preservation of beneficial practices (such as breast feeding) as well as the elimination of harmful traditional practices.

GAMCOTRAP is committed to the promotion and protection of women and girl children’s political, social, educational and sexual reproduction and health rights.
