For many years, the Gambia Committee on Traditional Practices affecting the health of women and Children – GAMCOTRAP has been engaging the citizenry to protect the sexual and reproductive health rights of women and children against harmful traditional practices. Key amongst such harmful practices is Female Genital Mutilation –FGM, Early and Forced Marriages and violence against women. It was a great challenge to open discussions on jealously guarded secrets about FGM. With tack and frankness, the topic is now subjected to debate amongst different sectors of society.

In the meantime, GAMCOTRAP continues to provide information and educate communities and professional bodies through advocacy, training information campaigns, sensitization and social mobilization. Action research which feeds into our programming has been very effective.
