STATEMENT DELIVERED BY AR AT THE GAMCOTRAP PUBLIC DECLARATION OF CIRCUMSCISERS & COMMUNITIES IN URR AND CRR – DEC 2009

Statement by Dr. Reuben Mboge – UNFPA Asst. Country Director

We, UNFPA, are happy to be part of this important occasion and consider it an honour for us to be given the opportunity to make a statement as a major stakeholder.

This event is important as it marks the 2 nd dropping of the knife through a public declaration of circumcisers and communities to protect their children against FGM/C. This public demonstration, I believe, will help keep alive the commitment to abandon this harmful traditional practice that has serious health & social consequences on the greater part of our population.

Today marks a very important day in the campaign to eradicate harmful traditional practices particular Female Genital Mutilation in the Gambia and in Africa. In 2007, GAMCOTRAP celebrated the first public declaration in the Gambia; which served as a phenomenal beginning for many more changes. That celebration has given people the confidence and the belief that change is possible in our communities, and must be done.
